The Maine Lightning Baseball program is a youth travel baseball organization directed by Mike D'Andrea (former Atlanta Brave, former Deering High Coach and current 2019 Maine State Class A Champion Scarborough coach).
Our teams train out of the Edge Academy and have the same system from 9U to 18U. The Lightning coaching staff will always consist of highly qualified coaches, many of whom played at the professional and collegiate level. We have 9U through 18U baseball teams that all share the same common goals. Our mission is to ensure that all of our players reach their full potential. Our vigorous training makes our program unique. We offer in-depth, year-round training for all of our players. We have been members of Amateur Athletic Association (AAU) Baseball and the Elite Baseball League (EBL). We will use our association with AAU baseball and/or the EBL to schedule games and participate in tournaments. Commitment is extremely important to us. And, although we expect our players to make Maine Lightning Baseball program their number one priority, we are also a family, school, Little League, and Babe Ruth-friendly organization. We will provide your child with unmatched baseball instruction and the opportunity to grow, learn, and have fun as a baseball player. This program will continually provide your child with outstanding competition and college exposure as they reach the 15U-18U levels.
Family Friendly Baseball
The Lightning take their baseball seriously but at the same time realize that there is life beyond the diamond. We feel we can create competitive “all-star” caliber baseball teams while limiting the time commitment of such an endeavor. We offer free cage time to all players, so if you miss a workout you can easily call to reserve a cage and put the work in. The Maine Lightning program is offered at a reasonable price for the service, instruction, and apparel. We also are offering a monthly payment plan. We do require that each player participate in fundraising to offset the cost. Since most games and training sessions are local, travel is kept at a minimum; allowing families the freedom to do more than just drive and play baseball. We also recognize the “thrill” of “travel” baseball. Therefore, we encourage all Lightning squads will participate in tournaments.
School Ball Friendly Baseball
The Maine Lightning program will always support and augment all school baseball programs. Lightning baseball will always try to minimize conflict with school ball. We encourage all of our players to take advantage of our free cage rentals during school baseball to get the extra work they may need. Our professional instructors will always be available to them for added support, and advice.
Babe Ruth Friendly Baseball
The Maine Lightning program understands that Babe Ruth baseball could be a part of your upcoming summer schedule. The opportunity for local play with neighbors from surrounding towns, with the chance to represent your town in district, state, regional and national tournaments makes the Babe Ruth experience one that we have to support. Therefore, the Lightning program will attempt to not conflict with Babe Ruth baseball tournaments. We do ask that you notify your Babe Ruth Coaches and let them know that your TOP priority is to the Maine Lightning baseball program. As such, during the Babe Ruth season our games will typically be scheduled on the weekends and will allow for all weekday games in the Babe Ruth schedule. We will do our best to avoid scheduling conflicts. Additionally, we will offer optional supplemental practice and training sessions during the season.
Goals and Expectations
The majority of our Lightning players are multi-sport athletes, which we feel is very important. While other sports are in season, those activities should take precedence over Lightning training. Of course, we do expect our players to be committed to the program. As such, if there are no conflicts, attendance to our off-season training sessions is encouraged. We also want to create a positive environment where the kids will improve baseball players providing them with the tools to succeed at the Middle School, High School, and eventually the College levels. Along the way, we hope to create memories that will last a lifetime. Finally, the coaches will be fair with respect to playing time as well as positions played based on a commitment from the athlete. However, given our goal to be a competitive team, situations will arise where time on the field will not be equal. Production on the field will lead to playing time!
These programs will play on the transitional diamond. This means that our young ball players will learn the ins and outs to leading, stealing bases, holding runners, picking off base runners, etc... This is a tremendous opportunity to get a head start on big diamond play. The bases are stretched to 70 ft, and the mound is pushed back to 50 ft. Little League fields are 46 ft mound to plate, and 60 ft base to base. That extra distance makes a big difference in play. We feel this will be a major confidence booster to the young players. They will not get overpowered by the big kid quite so easily. That extra travel time of the pitched ball often makes hitting a bit easier.
- Winter Training − targeted 25 game schedule − Practices when appropriate, it will be difficult to have all players available during the summer due to their Little League Schedule. − Sunday double headers − Full uniform, tee-shirt, and hat will be included.
Winter training with focus on individual positions, base running and will stress hitting techniques. These sessions will be augmented with specialty sessions (e.g. catchers and pitchers clinics). Indoor session’s are planned for November through March. · Supplemental training during Babe Ruth and School seasons.
· A game schedule consisting of: League play, as part of EBL in both SPRING and SUMMER. The spring season starts in early April through May. If the teams qualify, a regional tournament is held in early June for the top 20 teams in New England. The summer season continues against local EBL teams, starting mid June ending in July. Players will be given a workout shirt, complete uniform; hat, belt, socks. Parents can order apparel also.
The 16U and 17U teams represent our College Prep and Showcase levels. These teams will play in 5-7 Tournaments throughout June and July with the goal of maximum exposure to College Coaches. Our Tournament schedule MAY range from Manchester, NH down to Ft. Myers, FL, so travel is a commitment. The players who represent our 16U or 17U levels are serious about playing baseball at the next level.
Our ultimate goal for the 16U and 17U levels is to provide guidance for the players in Maine and New England to help them achieve their baseball dreams. We believe through education of baseball and life skills we can help pave the path toward a bright future for our young ball players. We believe that all dreams are achievable with a tireless work ethic (on and off the field), knowledge, and the proper exposure. We as an organization seek only players who have the desire to and play baseball at the next level, either college or professional.
